Buffer alternatives, once the channels add up.
The best Buffer alternatives in 2026 are Publer for an even cheaper per-account bill from $5 a month, Metricool for anyone managing several brands from $20 a month, Later for Instagram-led planning from $25, and Hootsuite, Agorapulse, or Sprout Social for teams that need a real inbox and reporting. Buffer itself starts free for three channels and $5 per channel after that, so the question is usually what your channel count does to that.
Prices were read from each company's own pricing page on 5 September 2026, and every entry links to its source. Postiva, our own tool, is on the list for a different job: producing the posts rather than scheduling them.

The short version
- Buffer is cheap at 3 to 5 channels and stops being cheap somewhere around 15 to 20.
- Per-channel billing is the thing to check. Publer charges per account, Metricool per brand, Hootsuite per user.
- Metricool is the usual upgrade for agencies, because brand-count pricing fits how agencies grow.
- If Buffer felt thin rather than expensive, the answer is Agorapulse or Sprout Social, not a cheaper tool.
Buffer against the seven, at a glance
Buffer sits in the first column as the thing being replaced. On the tick rows it holds its own against everything here, which is worth knowing before you migrate: the reasons to leave Buffer are usually in the Billed by row rather than in the feature rows.
Where it genuinely thins out is analytics and the inbox, and those are the two rows to check against your actual complaint.

Marked from each company's own feature and pricing pages on 5 September 2026. A tick means the vendor presents it as included at or above the plan in the Starts at row, a half tick means it ships but is limited next to the specialists here or sits behind a higher tier, and a cross means it is not offered. Feature sets move; confirm anything you are about to buy on the vendor's own page.
Seven alternatives, and who each one is for.
Ordered by fit rather than by price. Every figure links to the page it was read from.
Publer
- Best for
- Keeping the bill at rock bottom while adding a few more accounts.
- Price
- Free, or from $5 per month
- Free plan
- Yes, with limits.
Publer is the closest thing to Buffer at a lower price, and it includes bulk scheduling and post recycling that Buffer reserves for higher tiers or does not do at all. Both tools bill the same way, per connected account rather than per plan, so compare them at your own account count: five accounts billed monthly is $20 on Publer Professional against $30 on Buffer Essentials. Publer keeps its AI and analytics on the Business tier, which is about $7 an account.
How the bill works
The $5 buys one social account, not a plan with everything in it. Publer bills per social account, and it works out at roughly $4 an account on Professional and $7 on Business, so five accounts is $20 or $35 a month. Teammates are charged separately again, yearly billing takes 20 percent off, and VAT is added on top.
What it does well
- Cheapest paid entry point in this comparison.
- Recycling and bulk scheduling included low down the range.
- Free tier underneath the paid plans.
What you give up
- Billed per social account, so the $5 headline is one account and five is $20.
- AI and analytics are Business-tier only, at roughly $7 an account.
- Reporting is basic.
- Interface is busier than Buffer.
Metricool
- Best for
- Freelancers and agencies who added clients and watched the channel bill climb.
- Price
- Free, or from $20 per month
- Free plan
- Yes, for one brand.
Metricool is the natural step up from Buffer for anyone managing more than one brand, because it prices by brand rather than by channel. Where Buffer charges you again for every account you connect on behalf of a client, Metricool charges for the client. Analytics are noticeably stronger too.
How the bill works
Priced by how many brands you manage. Starter is $20 a month billed annually and $25 monthly; the tiers climb with brand count rather than with features.
What it does well
- Brand-count pricing fits agency growth far better than per-channel.
- Analytics and competitor tracking above the price point.
- Free tier for one brand, no time limit.
What you give up
- Steeper learning curve than Buffer.
- Inbox is lighter than the enterprise tools.
- Brand tiers step up in jumps rather than smoothly.
Postiva
Our product- Best for
- When the queue keeps running empty rather than the bill running high.
- Price
- $15, $29, or $79 per month
- Free plan
- No free tier. 14-day trial, no card.
Postiva is ours, so weigh this accordingly. It is not a scheduler and does not replace Buffer: Postiva does not publish to any platform. It writes and renders the content, and you post it. It takes one blog post, article, or URL and writes the platform-native posts that come out of it, including finished carousel slides as image files and a LinkedIn PDF. Most people who use it keep Buffer's free tier for the posting.
How the bill works
Billed per team, not per seat and not per channel. The plan sets how much you generate each month, not which features you can open.
What it does well
- Billed per team, so channels and reviewers cost nothing extra.
- Produces finished carousel images, not just captions.
- Client approval links included on every plan.
What you give up
- No publishing, no connected accounts, no queue.
- No analytics or inbox.
- No free tier, only a 14-day trial without a card.
Later
- Best for
- Instagram-first accounts where the grid is part of the brand.
- Price
- Free, or from $25 per month
- Free plan
- Yes, with limits.
Later does visual planning better than Buffer, and for an account where the feed is designed rather than assembled that is a real reason to move. The base plan is more expensive than Buffer for a small setup, and users, social sets, and AI credits are charged separately on top.
How the bill works
Starter is $25 billed monthly and $18.75 billed annually. Extra users, extra social sets, and extra AI credits are all separate line items.
What it does well
- Best-in-class grid preview and visual planner.
- Free tier available.
- Strong on Instagram-specific formats.
What you give up
- Add-ons stack up quickly beyond the base price.
- Weaker fit if LinkedIn or X carries your content.
- More expensive than Buffer at small channel counts.
Hootsuite
- Best for
- Teams that outgrew Buffer on capability rather than on price.
- Price
- $99, $199, or $399 per user, per month
- Free plan
- No free plan. 30-day trial.
Hootsuite is the upgrade in the other direction: more inbox, more reporting, more approval control, and a much larger bill. Because it charges per user rather than per channel, it can occasionally work out cheaper than Buffer for a single person running twenty-plus channels, which is the one scenario where this swap saves money.
How the bill works
Billed per user. Three seats on Standard is $297 a month, not $99. Enterprise is quote-only.
What it does well
- Full social inbox and message management.
- Per-user pricing means unlimited channels do not multiply the bill the way Buffer does.
- Approval workflows built for larger teams.
What you give up
- Starts at $99 a user, against Buffer starting free.
- No free tier at all.
- Per-user billing punishes teams the way per-channel punishes multi-account brands.
Agorapulse
- Best for
- Message-heavy accounts where comments are the actual workload.
- Price
- From about $99 per user, per month
- Free plan
- No free plan. Free trial.
If the reason Buffer stopped working is that nobody can keep up with comments and DMs, Agorapulse is the answer rather than a cheaper scheduler. Its unified inbox is the strongest in this comparison. It is priced per user, so it is a significant jump from anything Buffer charges.
How the bill works
Per-user pricing across Standard, Professional, Advanced, and a custom tier, so a three-person team pays three times the headline.
What it does well
- Best inbox here for high message volume.
- Solid approval workflows and client reporting.
- Genuine social CRM features rather than a comment list.
What you give up
- Per-user pricing from around $99.
- Far more tool than a small brand needs.
- No free tier.
Sprout Social
- Best for
- Reporting that has to satisfy a client or a board.
- Price
- $79 to $399 per seat, per month
- Free plan
- No free plan. Free trial.
Sprout Social is the far end of this list. Nobody moves here to save money; they move because a report has to look a certain way and hold up under questions. Essentials at $79 a seat is the entry point, but the tier people mean is Standard at $199.
How the bill works
Four tiers, billed annually. Essentials is $79 a seat annually and $99 billed monthly. Seats multiply.
What it does well
- Strongest reporting in this comparison.
- Mature permissions and approval controls.
- Handles genuinely large account volumes.
What you give up
- Per-seat pricing at enterprise rates.
- Essentials is thin; the real comparison is $199 a seat.
- No free tier.
What Buffer actually costs at your channel count
Buffer prices per connected channel, and the per-channel rate falls as you add more. That structure is generous at the bottom and unforgiving in the middle, which is where most people notice it.
Run your own number before comparing anything. A five-channel brand and a twenty-channel agency are having completely different conversations about the same tool.
3 channels
- Buffer Essentials, roughly
- Free tier covers it
- Where the cheaper option is
- Nowhere. Stay.
5 channels
- Buffer Essentials, roughly
- About $25 to $30 a month
- Where the cheaper option is
- Publer, marginally
10 channels
- Buffer Essentials, roughly
- About $50 to $60 a month
- Where the cheaper option is
- Metricool, if they are separate brands
20 channels
- Buffer Essentials, roughly
- Volume rates apply, but the total keeps climbing
- Where the cheaper option is
- Metricool or a per-user tool
Buffer's published Essentials rate is $5 a channel billed yearly and $6 monthly, with lower per-channel rates above 10 channels. Read from buffer.com/pricing on 5 September 2026; use their calculator for your exact count.

Read from each company's own pricing page on 5 September 2026. Several headline an annual rate; monthly billing costs more. The Publer and Buffer figures are one account or channel, not a whole plan: five of either is $20 and $30 a month.
Why people leave Buffer, and what fixes each reason
There are three common reasons and they lead to three different tools. Sorting out which one you have takes a minute and saves a migration.
- Too expensive at your channel count: move to a brand-priced tool like Metricool, or a per-account one like Publer.
- Not enough analytics: Metricool at the affordable end, Sprout Social at the serious end.
- Cannot keep up with comments and messages: Agorapulse, which is what its inbox exists for.
- The calendar keeps going empty: no scheduler fixes this. It is a production problem.
